Chaminade University Athletics

Hall of Fame Bylaws

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
SELECTION COMMITTEE BY-LAWS

Name
The name will be the Chaminade Athletics Hall of Fame (hereafter “Hall of Fame”).

Purpose
The Chaminade Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 2009. The sole purpose of the Hall of Fame is to give formal recognition to those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the athletic program as a player or coach or who have brought great honor to Chaminade Athletics because of their service contribution as a staff member within the University, during their time at Chaminade or as community benefactor. An event shall be held annually to induct the Hall's newest members and pay tribute to all its members. The Chaminade Athletics Hall of Fame strives to represent outstanding accomplishments across the entirety of the University's athletic programs.

Selection Committee
The function of the Selection Committee will be to select an annual induction class from the list of eligible nominees. The Selection Committee will be limited to ten (10) working members. It will include the following: The Director of Athletics (“AD”), Sports Information Director (“SID”), Senior Woman Administrator, Faculty Athletic Representative, one (1) faculty member or university administrator (department head level or higher), one (1) member of the Hui Ahinahina Club, one (1) member of the current Chaminade coaching staff to recognize a relationship to the athletics department (these individuals will rotate after one voting cycle and will be chosen by the Director of Athletics), one (1) former student-athlete alum to recognize the relationship to the Alumni, one (1) at-large member, and one (1) member of the Athletic Hall of Fame.

The AD will form the committee each year and serve as the chair. The AD, or designee, will be the committee's ex-officio (non-voting member). No committee member can satisfy more than one of the ten (10) working members.

The committee will meet as deemed necessary by the AD, with a quorum (at least five [5] of the voting members) of the committee needed for voting purposes. Selection Committee shall meet before the induction of new members to review nominations and select new members to the Hall. A selection meeting will be held annually to select up to two inductees per year. Selection committee members must agree to be present for the selection meeting in person or by a conference call for their votes to be counted.

Qualifications and Categories
Induction into the Hall of Fame can be earned through one of four (4) categories; student-athlete, team, coach, and contributor.
  1. An individual is given recognition for their impact and contributions to Silverswords Athletics as a student-athlete, coach, team member, and contributor for their service to athletics as a community member or staff member within the University during their time at Chaminade, as well as their achievements after leaving the University.
  2. A student-athlete is eligible for nomination and selection after a period of five (5) years following the completion of their time at the University, except in the cases of posthumous induction. A former student-athlete who is coaching at Chaminade but is being nominated for their playing career must meet the criteria stated above for an Athlete nomination.
  3. Chaminade coaches/staff members must be employed for at least 5 years and become eligible for induction at any time after 5 years of service at the College. A coach or staff member who did not participate in athletics at Chaminade University is not eligible for nomination until five (5) years after their separation from the Department of Athletics, except in cases of posthumous induction. There is no specific time requirement for the service category, which can be awarded at the selection committee's discretion.
  4. A team is recognized for excelling in athletic competition during a given year. A team is eligible for nomination and selection after a period of ten (10) years after the completion of that team's season.
Who is not eligible:  Individuals who contribute to Chaminade athletics but do not meet these guidelines shall not be considered for Hall of Fame membership. Individuals making important contributions to the Chaminade Athletics program through service that do not rise to the level of Hall of Fame selection should be recommended for a Sports Hall of Fame Certificate of Appreciation or possibly a Chaminade Service Award given annually by the Alumni Association.

Nomination of Individuals and Teams

Chaminade University of Honolulu
Attn: Athletics Sports Information Director
3140 Waialae Ave
Honolulu, HI 96816-1578

All nominations shall be submitted to the Selection Committee by June 15 of each year unless otherwise extended by public announcement. Any nomination received after that date will be considered for the following induction period. The Sports Information office shall provide biographies for each nominee based on the information furnished by the nominator and any additional information that may be obtained from each committee member.

All nominations will be eligible for consideration for a period of three (3) years. After that, anyone not selected for induction will be removed from consideration, and any eligible nominee may be re-nominated.

Persons Nominated for Certificate of Appreciation:  The committee shall choose no more than one person each year for a certificate – and this recognition shall be voted on separately from the new inductee roster. Any persons suggested for this honor that is not chosen shall remain on the list for consideration for no more than 3 years. The Hall of Fame will either provide a digital or permanent display containing a section listing those awarded a Certificate of Appreciation.

Selection and Induction of Individuals or Teams
The Selection Committee shall meet each year to select the next induction class for the Hall of Fame. Once the committee has reviewed all the submitted nominations, they may select and move forward for a vote up to nine (9) finalists as follows:
  • Up to six (6) individuals (of which only one [1] will be posthumous) in the student-athlete, coach, and staff categories. A maximum of two (2) can be made from any single sport.
  • Up to one (1) team.
  • Up to two (2) individuals in the service category.

Voting for Selection
Voting shall take place by secret ballot. All committee members should rank the candidates, a maximum of nine (9), in order, with 9 points going to the top and 1 point to the bottom candidate. Once the balloting is complete, the candidates will be ranked by total points. Since no more than one (1) inductee per sport can be inducted per year, if a second candidate from an individual sport ranks in the top two, they will be dropped from consideration for that year alone, and the next eligible candidate will be selected for induction.

Attendance at Hall of Fame Weekend Required:  Selection and entry into the Hall of Fame are contingent upon attendance at the annual ceremony. If a selected candidate cannot attend, they will not be inducted into the Hall of Fame and re-entered into the list of nominees. The selection committee will address individual circumstances.

By-laws
Changes to the by-laws may be made as deemed necessary. Committee members may recommend changes to the by-laws, and the Director of Athletics, Sports Information Director, and Alumni Director shall cooperate on the final determination of by-law changes.
